April 12, 2013
HONOLULU - Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort's Great Lawn will be the site of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano All-Stars Concert on Saturday, May 11. The star- studded lineup includes Maunalua, John Cruz, Raiatea Helm, Taimane Gardner and the ladies and gentlemen of Tihati Productions. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the concert from 6 to 9 p.m.
Maunalua, featuring lead Bobby Moderow, Jr. has been honored by HARA for more than a decade with multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards including the coveted Hawaiian Album of the Year for the self-titled album, Maunalua. It has won the Group of the Year award several times, as well as Entertainer of the Year. John Cruz has distinguished himself as one of the most talented artists to ever come out of Hawai‘i. In 2008, HARA awarded his second album, One of these Days, the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Contemporary Album of the Year. His original "Jo Bo's Night" was included on the compilation CD Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, which went on to win the first GRAMMY® ever awarded for Hawaiian music in 2005. At 18 years of age, Raiatea Mokihana Maile Helm set the Hawaiian music community on fire with her pure, clear voice and the release of her debut CD Far Away Heaven in 2002, which captured Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Most Promising Artist CD. She has since earned six more Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and two GRAMMY® nominations. Also on the lineup is ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner, herself a rising star on the island music scene, as well as the dancers of Tihati Productions.
Tickets for the concert are $25 per person for general admission, $50 for VIP seating and $600 for a VIP table of six, which includes dinner and one beverage for each person. Each plate will also include vegetable pot stickers. Beverages and snacks will also be sold separately.
The concert is a part of the annual "Mele Mei," a month-long celebration of Hawaiian music presented by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA). Mele Mei will feature more than 20 events, including workshops, live concerts, awards ceremonies, culminating with the 36th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawaii's GRAMMY® awards.) Hilton's concerts will culminate with fireworks at 8:45 p.m. The concert is a fundraiser for the 35th Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
