BIRMINGHAM, UK -  More than 600 guests from across the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry witnessed Hilton Birmingham Metropole score a hat-trick at the Springboard Awards for Excellence 2010 in London on 29 November.

The four star hotel based at the National Exhibition Centre was announced as the winner of this year’s Best Student Placement Provider Award, the Education Award and the Ambassador Award.

For more than 20 years, Springboard have been helping young, unemployed and disadvantaged people into careers in hospitality, leisure and tourism as well as being the industry’s natural partner in improving its image, attracting new talent and addressing skills shortages.

Patrick Stapleton, general manager of Hilton Birmingham Metropole, said: “In four years, Hilton Birmingham Metropole has built a reputation for delivering an exceptional work experience and education programme.

“By building Springboard into our strategic HR plan, my aim was to spread awareness to the fantastic career opportunities available within the hotel and catering sector; with a view to increasing the ratio of under 21s into the business, grow retention figures year on year, and build our future workforce and tomorrow’s leaders into our succession plan.

“The programme has simply grown into a vast educational support role expanding, so successfully and rapidly, liaising regularly with many Birmingham schools to plan, devise, deliver and roll out alternative work experience weeks, teacher training sessions, Year 10/11 work experience weeks, apprenticeships and the implementation of our N.E.E.T project for disadvantaged youth. As a company, we will continue to support such work within our local community.

“This has led to us being able to offer 36 contracted positions annually; an opportunity to learn with a structured, meaningful and practical hands-on work experience, inspiring the young professionals of tomorrow, a true accolade to their professionalism and dedication."

The shining star of the evening was Amanda Bass, training officer at the hotel, the winner of this year’s Ambassador Award. This award seeks enthusiastic, motivated and passionate individuals who inspire and influence potential recruits. She was praised for her impressive portfolio of activities, which ranged from promoting the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry to helping disadvantaged people secure employment.

Amanda commented, “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. Hospitality chose me, and now my role as a Springboard Ambassador allows me the privilege to genuinely help choose others, and give a real sense of working within the industry.”
