Hilton Americas-Houston’s Super-Sized Chocolate Holiday Display Tips Scale At Over One Ton
Larger-than-life Chocolate Sculpture Created by Hotel’s Master-Trained Pastry Chef Sweetens Holidays
December 10, 2014
HOUSTON - Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and he's back this year bigger, better than ever and chocolate! Award-winning Hilton Americas-Houston's Pastry Chef Mahesh Weerasinghe, trained by one of only 13 Master Chefs in the U.S., once again showcases his advanced culinary skills with a one-ton larger-than-life chocolate display featuring Santa Claus and his elves busy at work on Christmas Eve. New to the display this year are a third elf and two reindeer, complete with Rudolph's chocolate red nose.
Entirely hand-sculpted from over 1,500 pounds of chocolate - the equivalent of 1,200,000 chocolate chips and 3,648,000 calories - the oversized Santa in his chair is accompanied by his elves, reindeer, pack, wagon full of toys and lamppost, all sitting atop a base of sculpted poured milk chocolate replicating weathered boards. A gingerbread-bricked, frosting-mortared fireplace completes the sugary scene, itself weighing in at 600 pounds and 1,094,400 calories.
Drawing on training received under award-winning chocolatier Chef Rudy Wieder, combined with his inherent artistic training, Chef Mahesh sculpted the sweet creation using chocolate just as an artist would use clay. By melting the chocolate, then letting it cool to a malleable consistency, the chocolate is built up on an armature, then detailed using artist's wood and clay carving tools.
Approximately 960 man-hours and four months of creative work and construction went into the making of this intricately carved and sculpted confectionary creation.
This delectable chocolate Christmas vignette, open to the public, is on display in the main lobby rotunda of Hilton Americas-Houston, located at 1600 Lamar Street, throughout the holidays.
Directly connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Hilton Americas-Houston contains the city's largest number of guestrooms, ballrooms, hotel meeting space, and the most technologically advanced services available under one roof. Conveniently situated between Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park, this AAA Four Diamond rated hotel boasts 1,200 luxuriously appointed guestrooms, 91,500 square feet of flexible, technologically advanced meeting space, two restaurants, lobby bar, coffee emporium and full service spa & health club.
