Eco-friendly Hotel Summit Generates New Ideas For Sustainability
Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Summit Aids Future Sustainability Projects
March 27, 2013
DUBAI, UAE - Attendees from government authorities and several different UAE Hilton branded hotels gathered at Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort at an event staged recently to build on existing sustainability efforts and to share best practices to further enhance eco-initiatives across the UAE community. Topics covered include energy reduction, water usage and waste output.
The event had several components to encourage sharing of information and collaboration with government authorities and environmental agencies. The Summit included a panel discussion with three UAE property representatives on completed sustainability initiatives, led by the senior sustainability manager from the Hilton Worldwide offices in Europe. Afternoon workshops were led by subject matter experts from health and safety, housekeeping, and engineering departments within Hilton Hotels and Resorts.
These subjects were driven by Hilton Worldwide’s proprietary measurement system called LightStay which was developed to calculate and analyze sustainability performance. LightStay measures multiple utility and operational metrics such as energy, water, carbon, housekeeping, paper product usage, waste, chemical storage, air quality and transportation. As the first major multi-brand hospitality company to make sustainability measurement a brand standard and require performance against sustainability goals, Hilton Worldwide completed the adoption of LightStay™ across the company’s more than 3,900 properties in 91 countries in 2011.
The Summit also welcomed contributions and eco-recommendations from Ms Shaika Ebrahim AlMutawa, Director of Business Development at Dubai Tourism Commerce Marketing (DTCM) , Mr Sultan Al Zaabi, Engineer, Conservation & Outreach Engagement at Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) and Ms Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson at Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) and President – UN Global Impact Network GCC States.
General Manager of the hosting hotel, Christian Muhr said, “I am delighted our inaugural sustainability summit attracted such prominent organisations with expert panellists, direct contributors and sponsors all playing a key role to ensure the event was a success. Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, and its sister hotels across the UAE, have benefited greatly from the learnings, specialist knowledge and experience we have seen throughout this important gathering.”
The event also had a spinoff benefit for Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), when a contribution for AED10,000 was presented at the end of the proceedings.
The Sustainability Summit was the first of its kind in the region but aims to be an annual event to help connect properties to achieve global sustainability targets. Event organisers were grateful to a range of sponsors including Farnek Avireal, Diversey and Organic Foods and Café.
